The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Deal.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his consent and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with recording often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that drove in teammates for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The next night in the final against the USA, he hit a tying home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent championship win.

The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
