The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
