The Manager Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as The 'Toughest Two Days' with the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to Saturday's win against Everton constituted "the worst 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian delivered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game interview even after notching a 2-0 win at home courtesy of strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points propelled Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to four matches.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"How the players are eager to improve has been superb and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with a host of challenges, they are performing admirably after a complicated week," he said.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because many people failed to back us."

Pressed on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was directed towards fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are very content with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I really commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to acknowledge because the commitment from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear who or what caused Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at Cobham, faced a pre-game news conference where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue related to the club's fans, a section of which have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
