Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored eighty-six opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a overwhelming 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game after guard Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.

However, the Heat were focused as they recorded 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through this."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
