Folly and Regal Arrogance Damaged Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet
The saga started with a single photograph, perhaps the most consequential ever captured of a member of the monarchy.
Present was the Baron Killyleagh, with his arm around a young woman, while another individual grinned suggestively in the rear.
Lacking that snapshot, captured at a party in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the assertions of a adolescent who stated she was trafficked across the ocean and compelled to have brief sexual encounters with a prince of the monarchy?
A curious, revealing action by someone who had publicly claimed to have never been aware of her, claimed he could no have had sex with her, and yet paid a substantial sum of his mother's funds to resolve a long-delayed legal case.
Over a Decade of Scandal
In this context, discussions of the royals acting firmly to cut Andrew off are wide of the mark. This controversy has endured for the better part of 15 years since that photograph, and a further photo of Andrew walking amiably with a notorious individual emerged.
- Hubris: For what duration did his siblings, perhaps even his mother and father, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Questionable Associations: They must have understood, if his staff and the police were doing their jobs, that he had some deeply disreputable companions given he openly hosted them to royal residences.
- Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.
Journeys were documented in royal annual reports: private aircraft travel from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".
Existence of Entitlement
Then there was the presumption which expected subservience when he appeared in a room or the profound awareness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in messages to his friends.
He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who unaccountably pampered him, was still living. The monarch did at least strip him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the consequence of his catastrophic and, as revealed, untruthful media appearance six years ago.
Latest Events
It was only in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the release of books giving more troubling information of his behavior and that of his associates.
Additional revelations have again exposed Andrew's assumption that he could escape deceiving about his interaction with a disgraced individual.
People (and the press) were far ahead of the monarchy. There was nobody of any importance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of presumption.
Institutional Fears
The more intelligent royals realized that. The one imperative is to hand down the monarchy, if not as previously at least complete and untarnished.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to overcome the legacy of earlier rulers, showing they are beneficial, accountable and attentive to their citizens.
He was placing all that in jeopardy in an age when deference and secrecy is no longer enough.
The Fallout
Ultimately, the famously hesitant monarch was pushed additional. There was little choice. The palace had lost control of the narrative.
Currently the removal of titles and the ongoing and life-long personal shame that will hurt Andrew the most.
- Demotion: Reduced to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
- Past Example: The primary monarch to lose his honorifics in modern times
- Naval Career: Notably hurtful given his role in the conflict
He is still a constitutional officer, in principle able to act for the sovereign, and he is still in the lineage to the throne, but neither of these will truly come to pass.
Future Prospects
Can persons he comes across still defer to him? Could they still slip up and call him Sir? Will they even say Andrew,
Naturally, he is not moving to suburbia, but to the sovereign's vast property at Sandringham.
At that location, he will be supplied by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some sort of private allowance.
This is not his former home, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Outstanding Concerns
The situation continues. There are still documents in the possession of US Congress to be revealed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Will lawmakers request additional information
- Financial Investigation: Or examine the waste of public money
- Legal Possibility: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his conduct
Possibly for the present the reputational impact to the institution is limited. The narrative from the royal household was evidently that the removal of titles was what the sovereign, and particularly other senior family members, sought.
Changed Stance
No more deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, significantly, the concise communication showed plainly that the institution were siding with the victim's version of incidents.
Even more, for the initial instance they eventually showed consideration for the survivors: "The censures are considered essential, despite the reality that he persists in refuting the claims against him."
In the end it is presumption, self-interest and inactivity that will undermine the institution. In his folly, self-indulgence and corruption, Andrew seems never to have grasped that reality.
