Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unwanted offerings might be viewed as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be sold via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Holdings

These gifts are said to be stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The detailed catalog has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question focused on if a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Diplomatic Context

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a novel approach to deal with the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
